Eugene Alfred Elder began Elder Company in 1896 in Hebron, Nebraska were he sold pianos, musical instruments, and jewelry, and was very successful. His brother, Alfred Elder, joined the business in May, 1901 when the firm's name was changed to Elder Jewelry. The only other employees of Elder Jewelry were their wives, Clyda and Edith, and Eugene's son, Eugene Edward Elder.
